Firoz Nadiadwala sues Netflix over use of ‘Baburao’ character in Kapil Sharma’s show

Veteran producer Firoz Nadiadwala has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, alleging unauthorised use of the iconic character Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, popularly known as Babu Bhaiya, from the cult comedy ‘Hera Pheri’ on the streaming platform’s hit series ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’.

The legal action, initiated in Mumbai High Court, claims that the show featured a sketch parodying Baburao’s mannerisms, catchphrases, and signature look without seeking permission from Nadiadwala, who holds the rights to the Hera Pheri franchise. The producer argues that the portrayal amounts to intellectual property infringement and misappropriation of character likeness.

Nadiadwala is seeking damages and a formal apology, asserting that the character, originally played by Paresh Rawal, is a protected creative asset and cannot be used for commercial entertainment without consent. The lawsuit reignites debate around character rights in Indian cinema, especially as legacy franchises continue to hold cultural and commercial value.

Netflix has yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
